Sodium Lauriminodipropionate (14960-06-6): Anti-Static Agent

CAS#: 14960-06-6

CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) numbers are unique identifiers assigned to every chemical substance, ensuring accurate identification across the industry.

What is it?

Sodium Lauriminodipropionate is an amphoteric surfactant derived from lauric acid (typically sourced from coconut oil) and iminodipropionate. This specialty ingredient functions primarily as an anti-static agent and secondary surfactant, making it particularly valuable in formulations designed for synthetic and performance fabrics that are prone to static cling.

What does it do?

Sodium Lauriminodipropionate serves multiple important functions in our Activewear detergent formulation. As an anti-static agent, it neutralizes static electrical charges that build up on synthetic performance fabrics during washing and drying, reducing static cling and making garments more comfortable to wear. As a secondary surfactant, it enhances overall cleaning performance by working synergistically with primary surfactants to lift and remove soils. Additionally, this ingredient provides mild conditioning properties that help maintain the soft feel and moisture-wicking capabilities of technical athletic fabrics.

How is it made?

Sodium Lauriminodipropionate is synthesized by reacting lauryl amine (derived from coconut oil-based lauric acid) with acrylic acid to form iminodipropionate, which is then neutralized with sodium hydroxide. This process creates an amphoteric surfactant—meaning it can function as both a mild cationic (positively charged) and anionic (negatively charged) agent depending on pH conditions. This dual nature makes it particularly effective for anti-static applications while remaining mild and biodegradable.

Ingredient Safety Profile

Sodium Lauriminodipropionate is recognized as a safe ingredient by leading environmental and health organizations:

  • EPA Safer Choice Approved Ingredient: Sodium Lauriminodipropionate meets EPA's criteria for safer chemical ingredients
  • Recognized by EWG: Sodium Lauriminodipropionate is acknowledged by the Environmental Working Group's safer ingredient standards
  • Amphoteric Surfactant: Exceptionally mild and suitable for sensitive skin applications
  • Biodegradable: Breaks down readily in the environment
  • Multi-Functional: Reduces the need for additional conditioning or anti-static agents
  • Derived from Natural Sources: Based on coconut oil-derived lauric acid

Important Note: While Sodium Lauriminodipropionate itself is recognized as a safe ingredient by EPA Safer Choice and EWG standards, Heritage Park Activewear Laundry Detergent is not yet EPA Safer Choice Certified or EWG VERIFIED as a complete product formulation.
