What Does EPA Safer Choice Mean?*
The Safer Choice label was developed by the EPA to make it easier for consumers to find products with safer chemical ingredients without giving up performance or quality. Earning the label isn't a one-time checklist; it's a rigorous, ongoing standard:
-
Every ingredient is reviewed. Before a product can carry the Safer Choice label, the EPA reviews every chemical ingredient, no matter how small the percentage in the formula. Each one has to meet strict criteria for human and environmental health, including screening for carcinogenicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity, aquatic toxicity, and environmental persistence.
-
Performance is tested. Products have to perform comparably to conventional alternatives in their category. Safer ingredients shouldn't mean a trade-off in how well a detergent actually works.
-
Packaging is evaluated. The EPA reviews packaging against the Safer Choice Standard, and partners commit to improving their packaging sustainability throughout the life of the partnership.
-
pH and VOCs are controlled. Labeled products must meet pH standards that minimize the risk of skin and eye irritation, and VOC content is restricted to reduce indoor air pollution.
Once a product earns the label, the EPA conducts annual audits to confirm that it continues to meet the Safer Choice Standard..

Why This Matters to Heritage Park Customers
"Being EWG VERIFIED® told our customers we were serious about transparency," said Tom Ceconi, Heritage Park President. "Earning the EPA Safer Choice label tells them we're serious about it from every angle: ingredient safety, performance, packaging, and ongoing accountability. Two independent, science-based programs have now looked closely at our formulas and reached the same conclusion: these are products families can trust."
Heritage All-Purpose Detergents and Silk and Wool Detergents are also independently lab-certified hypoallergenic; pediatrician- and dermatologist-tested; and Leaping Bunny certified as cruelty-free.
With both EWG VERIFIED® and EPA Safer Choice certifications now in hand, Heritage Park remains committed to giving our customers detergents that are safer for their families, their homes, and the environment without ever sacrificing performance.
