Choose A Luxury Detergent: The Best Option for Fine Linen and Clothing

Using a luxury laundry detergent to extend the life and performance of your fine washables is a wonderful idea. These products are made to clean tough stains while protecting the integrity and beauty of both regular and delicate fabrics. An all-purpose luxury liquid laundry detergent* is a great option for washing towels, bed linens, or clothing. But not all “luxury detergents” are created equal. As a consumer, you want to understand exactly what is in your luxury detergent and ensure that you're getting the best value and performance for your money.

Comparing Heritage Park vs. Tyler Glamorous Wash

Today we'll review Heritage Park Luxury All-Purpose Detergent in comparison with Tyler Glamorous Wash Diva Detergent, a popular “luxury” detergent from Tyler Fragrances. Both of these products are made to work in all temperature water; can be used in both an HE and regular washing machine on any wash cycle; and are intended for all-purpose washing of clothing and linen. However, Heritage Park yields many more loads per bottle; is formulated with cleaning enzymes to boost performance; is hypoallergenic; and is friendly to the environment and animals. Let's take a closer look.

More About Tyler Glamorous Wash Diva Detergent

This detergent seems to be all about the scent. Made by Tyler Candle Company, Glamorous Wash allows candle fans to enjoy their "favorite scents throughout the day and night." It promises to "clean effectively yet remain gentle" on delicate fabrics such as "linens, lingerie, and fine fabrics." Instructions say to shake the bottle before using it. It is made without phosphates but otherwise, the ingredients are not listed on the website or the bottle. The website sells many scented products such as sachets and signature scented candles. We tested the DIVA scent, which is a heavy mix of fruits, rich floral, aromatic chocolate, and amber.

  • Made without phosphates
  • Ingredients not listed on bottle (or website)
  • Not clear if biodegradable
  • No animal testing but not outside verified
  • Not hypoallergenic or free of dyes
  • Manufactured by candle company as brand extension
  • Heavily scented

Comparing the Performance of Heritage Park with Tyler Glamorous Wash Diva

Let's begin with cost: Tyler Glamorous Wash is significantly more expensive than Heritage Park. A bottle of Tyler yields ten loads, at a hefty cost of nearly $3.00 per load (regular and HE use the same amount), which is between two and three times the cost of Heritage Park, depending on whether your machine is regular or HE.

It's also difficult to discern whether clothes washed in Tyler Glamorous Wash are getting clean, because the Diva scent is very overpowering; we assume that is by design for fans who say this is their favorite scent. Heritage Park left our mildly soiled clothing clean and smelling fresh, even though the original formula contains no added scent (note: for people who enjoy a bit of fragrance, lightly scented versions of Heritage Park are available in both Lavender Mist and Shore Breeze). When it comes to towels, Tyler Glamorous Wash left behind a very strong scent but did not necessarily get them clean or fluffy after machine washing; in fact, the towel nap was actually down a bit after washing with Tyler, as if it had been coated. In contrast, Heritage Park got towels super clean and left them noticeably soft and fresh smelling. This is due to Heritage Park's proprietary blend of enzymes that clean towel fibers while allowing them to retain their innate softness and absorbency.

Other Essential Things to Know about Heritage Park vs. Tyler Glamorous Wash

It's important to remember that Tyler Glamorous Wash Diva is made by the Tyler Candle Company, as a brand extension of their popular candle scents. *Liquid laundry soap is preferable to a detergent pod, bar soap, or powder detergent. We also recommend skipping fabric softener, which can cause soap scum to build up on fabric fibers, particularly towels. Instead, we recommend using biodegradable wool dryer balls to shorten drying time while naturally softening towels and clothing. Read more about the benefits of wool dryer balls here.

A Word About Laundry Enzymes

Anyone shopping for an effective luxury laundry detergent should understand the role of laundry enzymes in safely cleaning fine fabric. In simple terms, a laundry enzyme is a natural compound that acts as a cleaning catalyst. An easy analogy for understanding enzymes is to think about the digestive enzymes in our saliva; each of these is targeted to break down and dissolve specific types of food. Laundry enzymes operate similarly, with different enzymes working to dissolve different types of stains.

Most stains contain more than one component; ice cream, for example, contains proteins, fats and starches. Stains are multi-layered and require multiple enzymes to release them from fabric. Trying to clean that ice cream stain with only protein enzymes would be ineffective because the starch and fat in the stain would coat or block the protein enzyme from working effectively. This is why enzyme blends are essential; a good enzyme detergent contains multiple enzymes that work to clear paths for each other, thus boosting their collective power to remove stubborn stains.

Detergents containing enzymes will be labeled  “enzyme detergent” or “biological detergent.” While laundry enzymes have been around the cleaning product industry for decades, they've grown quite popular in recent years as consumers seek alternatives to harsh cleaning chemicals. Enzymes are also gentler and safer for skin than chemical stain removers.
